Weight-Loss Guides: Where to Start
Start with a goal your doctor agrees with: about 5 to 10% of your starting weight within 6 months, through a reduced-calorie eating plan, more activity and support. A pace of 1 to 2 pounds a week is more likely to last. These guides explain what helps most, where a supplement fits, and how to spot a bad one.

First steps
Where should you start if you want to lose weight?
Start with a talk with your doctor and a realistic goal. NIDDK suggests a first goal of 5 to 10% of your starting weight within 6 months (NIDDK: choosing a safe weight-loss program).
That goal sounds small, and that is the point. If you weigh 200 pounds, 5% means 10 pounds, and CDC says modest loss like that can already help blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar (CDC: losing weight). People who lose about 1 to 2 pounds a week are more likely to keep it off.
A safe program has four parts, according to NIDDK: a reduced-calorie eating plan, more physical activity, support, and a plan for keeping the weight off (NIDDK: choosing a safe weight-loss program). Everything else, including any supplement, sits on top of those four.
Weigh yourself once, at the same time of day, and write it down. Pick one meal to change and one walk to add. Book a check-up if you have not had blood work in the last year.
Pick a guide
Which weight-loss guide should you read first?
Read the weight-loss guide first if you are just starting, and the supplement checklist before you buy anything.
| Guide | What it answers | Read it if |
|---|---|---|
| Weight-loss guide | What works, ranked by evidence; a safe pace; the Diabetes Prevention Program | You are starting or restarting a plan |
| Choosing a weight-loss supplement | A checklist for labels, blends, %DV and false claims | You are comparing products or reading ads |
| Healthy weight-loss pace | Why 1 to 2 pounds a week, and how to track it | Your progress feels slow |
| GLP-1 drugs vs supplements | What FDA says about unapproved GLP-1 products | You have seen "natural GLP-1" ads |
| Supplement red flags | FTC and FDA warning signs, fake reviews, hidden drugs | An offer looks too good to be true |

A sample day
What does a realistic weight-loss day look like?
Mostly ordinary. Planned meals, some movement, enough sleep and a weekly weigh-in. Tap through the dial.
- Morning, about 7:30
One capsule, as the label graphic suggests. Same time every day, so you never double up.
- Meals, as planned
A calorie-aware eating plan does the heavy lifting. Keep taking every medicine your doctor prescribed.
- Move most days
About 150 minutes a week of activity was part of the program that cut new type 2 diabetes by more than half.
- Weigh in weekly
Same scale, same time, once a week. A pace of 1 to 2 pounds a week is more likely to last.
Times are examples. Diabetes Prevention Program results (NIDDK: Diabetes Prevention Program results); a healthy pace of weight loss (CDC: losing weight).
You are not alone
How common is obesity among U.S. adults?
Very common. About 41.9% of U.S. adults had obesity in 2017 to March 2020, and 9.2% had severe obesity (CDC: adult obesity facts).
Where supplements fit
Can a supplement like Slim Metrix help you lose weight?
At most, a little, and only next to an eating plan and activity. NIH says little is known about whether weight-loss supplements work, and some have been linked to harm (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements (health professional fact sheet)).
In the reviews NIH summarizes, chromium picolinate gave about 1.1 kg (about 2.4 pounds) more loss than placebo and green tea about 0.95 kg, effects of debatable clinical relevance (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements (health professional fact sheet)). Slim Metrix lists both, along with berberine and five other blend ingredients, but no trial has tested the product itself.
Slim Metrix is a supplement, not a medicine. It is not a GLP-1 drug, not a weight-loss drug and not a diabetes medicine, and it must never replace one. Supplements can also be costly and interact with medicines (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements (consumer fact sheet)).
Before you buy any product, run it through our supplement checklist. It works for Slim Metrix and for every other bottle on the shelf.
Blood sugar
What if your doctor says your blood sugar is creeping up?
Ask whether you have prediabetes, and ask about a lifestyle program. Prediabetes means an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL (NIDDK: prediabetes and insulin resistance).
The best-known study on this is the Diabetes Prevention Program. A lifestyle program aiming for 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week cut the chance of type 2 diabetes by 58%, and by 71% in people 60 and older. Metformin cut it by 31% (NIDDK: Diabetes Prevention Program results).
No supplement has results like that. If you already take metformin or insulin, keep taking it as prescribed, and ask before adding a product with chromium, berberine, alpha-lipoic acid or ginseng, since several of these may add to the effect of diabetes medicines (NIH ODS: chromium fact sheet) (MSK About Herbs: alpha-lipoic acid).
At your next visit
What should you ask your doctor before starting a weight-loss plan?
Ask what a healthy target weight and pace are for you, and whether any of your medicines or conditions change the plan.
- What is a realistic goal for the next 6 months?
- Should I check my A1C, fasting glucose, blood pressure or cholesterol first?
- Is there a lifestyle program or dietitian you recommend?
- Would a prescription medicine make sense for me?
- Is it safe to add a supplement with my current medicines? (Bring the bottle.)
- What signs should make me stop a supplement and call you?
Tell every doctor and pharmacist about every supplement you take, since supplements can interact with medicines (NCCIH: using dietary supplements wisely).
FAQ
Questions about starting a weight-loss plan
How much weight is safe to lose in a week?
About 1 to 2 pounds a week for most adults. CDC says people who lose weight at that pace are more likely to keep it off (CDC: losing weight). Faster loss is harder to sustain. Ask your doctor what pace fits your health and medicines.
What is a good first weight-loss goal?
About 5 to 10% of your starting weight within 6 months, per NIDDK (NIDDK: choosing a safe weight-loss program). For someone at 200 pounds, that is 10 to 20 pounds. Even 5% can improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar (CDC: losing weight).
Do weight-loss supplements work?
Mostly not by much. NIH says little is known about whether they work and that some have been linked to harm (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements (health professional fact sheet)). The best-studied ingredients gave about 1 kg more loss than placebo. An eating plan and activity do most of the work.
Can Slim Metrix replace a diet or exercise plan?
No. Slim Metrix is a dietary supplement with no trial of its own, and the label dose is one capsule a day. Any change in weight will come mainly from what you eat and how much you move. Treat it as an add-on at most.
Is it too late to lose weight after 60?
No. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, the lifestyle program cut new type 2 diabetes by 71% in people aged 60 and older (NIDDK: Diabetes Prevention Program results). Talk with your doctor about safe activity and any medicines before you begin.
Where can I find a weight-loss program I can trust?
Ask your doctor first. NIDDK says a safe program includes a reduced-calorie eating plan, more activity, support and a maintenance plan, and warns against promises like losing 30 pounds in 30 days (NIDDK: choosing a safe weight-loss program). Our weight-loss guide walks through each part.
